2010 Fall Television Schedule

I set my Seasons Passes for the fall and I have surprisingly few conflicts, which makes for a stuffed TiVo. It also gives me less shows I have to watch live, On Demand or online. I think most of the NBC shows are available On Demand, which is convenient for Monday and Thursday nights. And of course, the shows on cable repeat frequently so my TiVo catches them whenever.

The only shows not listed are Running Wilde, Raising Hope, and Wildcats, which I watched once or twice each but didn't commit to. And does anyone know what happened to Human Target? I loved that show!

Cake for Hire

Some people have suggested that I sell my baked goods. Here's the problem, (I've said it before, but I'll say it again) I'm a great baker but a lousy decorator. For instance, would you pay for this cake?

The above cake was chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting. To make the cake a little richer, I added some instant coffee. It gave it a coffee undertone but didn't turn it into a mocha cake. The frosting was a little thick so I thinned it out with a bit more milk. The kid graduating said it was the best cake ever! High praise from a true connoisseur.

Here's a cake that I did not decorate. It was from a local bakery and was served at a party held to watch the last episode of Lost. I like how they did the frosting flames and splashing water. The cake was your basic chocolate with white icing. The taste was just okay, but isn't it nicely decorated?

I think there is a market for my cupcakes, cookies and muffins since those baked goods require little to no artistic talent to make them look appetizing.

Suspension

My mom got the DVD box set of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century for Christmas and we watched the first two-part episode today. I remember watching the show as a kid, but I don't know whether I've ever seen the pilot. What I do know is that I was completely taken by surprise when the theme song started and the familiar tune had lyrics!



When the end credits rolled, I found out the song was sung by Kipp Lennon, who has a website with audio clips available for download. Do yourself a favor and download Suspension (Theme from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century) immediately! It is awesome.

2009 Fall Television

For some reason, I'm just not that excited about television this fall. A lot of my favorite shows got canceled, and the new shows I've been watching are okay I guess. Regardless, here's my list of what I'll TiVo, what I'll watch live (if I'm home) and what I'll watch online for the fall season. I might watch some On Demand, but since I still don't really understand what shows are consistently on the On Demand channels I can't plan on it.

That's 1 show each on TLC, PBS, USA, Food Network, Comedy Central and Teen Nick, 2 shows on CBS, 2 shows on CW, 3 shows on FOX, 4 shows on NBC and 5 shows on ABC. I'm already behind on a bunch of shows since I didn't set Season Passes right away, and I forgot to watch shows live, Online or On Demand.

What I'm Watching

I don't understand why I keep reading about how there is nothing to watch on television. I'm still watching/TiVo'ing plenty. And I don't see it ending soon since new shows are starting everyday.

Earlier in the "summer" (after the television season supposedly ended) I watched episodes of canceled shows that the networks were burning off like Pushing Daisies and Valentine. There are a few shows that I'm watching in reruns like House and Smallville that I stopped watching during the regular season or that I didn't record because they conflicted with other shows.

As for new summer programming, I have a long list. Some I'm only letting myself watch in real time because I'm embarrassed to TiVo them, and they're on all the time: Dance Your Ass Off, Tori and Dean, Daisy of Love, Charm School with Ricki Lake. Others I have season passes for: Eureka, Iron Chef America, Burn Notice, Chowder and Merlin. Torchwood's Children of Earth episodes are being saved on my mom's TiVo since I don't get BBC America.

MTV is showing seasons seven and eight of Degrassi: The Next Generation and Comedy Central is rerunning episodes of Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist. New episodes of Monk and Psych start in August.

That's a lot of TV.

Tonight on Turner Classic Movies...

A while ago, my cable package got rid of CMT and added TCM. I just about never watched the country channel but have watched a lot of the movie channel.

I'll be watching tonight starting at 8:00 PM. There is a special called, "Chuck Jones: Memories of Childhood" about animator/director Chuck Jones after which they are playing classic Warner Brothers cartoons like "One Froggy Evening" and "What's Opera Doc?" The special reruns at 10:30pm and is followed by "The Phantom Tollbooth," which Jones directed.

2008 Fall Television Schedule

So, I think I've figured out what I'll TiVo, what I'll watch live (if I'm home) and what I'll watch online for the fall season... at least until the schedules get shuffled or shows get canceled. If you need a printable fall schedule in order to make your own choices, click here.

This may seem like a lot of shows, but it's about normal for me. I don't watch a lot in real time, but that's why I love TiVo. Sometimes I wish I had a dual tuner TiVo so I could record more than one show at a time, but I'd never leave the house if that was the case. Same for having more stations although I'd love to get BBC America, The Independent Film Channel or Sundance Channel.

So, that's 1 show on CBS, 3 shows on CW, 4 shows on ABC, 5 shows on FOX and 7 shows on NBC. CBS would have had one more show if they hadn't canceled Moonlight.

Coconut Macaroons

From the Baker's coconut recipe. On the bag of coconut the chocolate dip was optional. I dipped one (in milk chocolate, the only kind I had on hand) and wasn't impressed with the results so I didn't dip the others. But I used the leftover melted chocolate to make chocolate covered raisins so it wasn't a total waste.

It's kind of hard to discern the chocolate covered raisin blobs on the black plate. I don't have a picture of the chocolate dipped macaroon since I ate it before I took these shots.

I had been thinking about making macaroons since I watched the "No Pork, No Pressure" episode of Dinner: Impossible. The episode was shot around Cleveland and has Chef Michael Symon making a Passover dinner for the congregation of a synagogue that's right down the street from me. I wish I was invited to the Seder because everything he made looked really delicious.

The episode also made be hungry for brisket. Luckily, Jack's Deli and Restaurant (14490 Cedar Road, University Heights, Ohio 44121) has a great brisket, and I had it for dinner last Friday. I'll have to do a proper review of that place sometime.

If you missed the show last Wednesday, it'll be on again September 13 at 3:00pm and September 14 at 11:00pm. Of course it's bound to be shown at other times too since the Food Network plays a lot of repeats.

Adios, Passions!

One of my favorite television shows and definitely my favorite soap opera ever has come to an end. The series finale of Passions aired last week. Unfortunately, I didn't get to watch it when it aired since I don't have DirectTV, but by following this link (thanks for sending it to me jenni!) I saw it today. It's a good ending to a crazy show.

Here's part 5 of 5 for those interested in knowing the fates of the residents of Harmony. If you never watched it (or haven't watched it lately) start with part one, which might not explain anything really.

So, goodbye Harmony residents! I'll miss you!

This isn't really new news, but I haven't baked anything lately so I thought I'd write about a show I just started watching. Chowder premiered last fall on the Cartoon Network, but I only recently became addicted. The main character (Chowder) is a chef's apprentice who eats anything and everything. All of the characters are named after food and most of the episodes revolve around a certain recipe or ingredient. It's all completely nonsensical and amusing.


Although it's a cartoon, they mix in stop motion animation, puppets and even live action. New episodes air on Thursday nights, but like most shows on basic cable you can catch it at other times. It's family friendly, and if you watch it with kids around you might even get them interested in cooking.

So how excited was I that not one, but two karaoke game shows were on tonight!?! Not very, but I watched them anyway. First, an encore presentation of The Singing Bee on NBC and an hour later, Don't Forget the Lyrics on Fox. Here's my assessment of the two shows.

The Spelling Bee is hosted by Joey Fatone. The show starts with Joey strolling through the audience and hand-picking six contestants. The six are whittled down to four, then two and finally one. That one is crowned the winner and gets a trophy and a chance to win $50,000.
The band and a rotating group of singers do most of the work. The contestants aren't really heard until the music stops and they must finish the song clip. The singers tonight were good. I'd guess a spare few make a living singing commercial jingles. Actually, the contestants weren't all that bad either.

Don't Forget the Lyrics is hosted by Wayne Brady. The show features one contestant for the entire hour (or two hours, the show ended in a cliffhanger!) picking songs from categories on a board and singing them karaoke-style in front of a giant video screen displaying the lyrics. The contestant sings with a live band for what seems like forever until the screen stops showing the words and has blanks that the contestant must fill-in. After they sing their guess, they can change their minds. They can also use one of their three lifelines, I mean "back-up singers" to help 'em out if they get stuck. The grand prize is one million dollars.

I like the format of Don't Forget the Lyrics better. The Spelling Bee was a little too slapdash. The pace was too quick and their was no second-guessing tension.

The singing was the worst part of Don't Forget the Lyrics. The fact that a terrible singer was showcased for an entire episode made it painful to watch/listen. I like The Singing Bee's use of professional singers as song starters.

What surprised me was the overlap of songs. Is "Walk Like an Egyptian" a hot karaoke selection?

Neither show was interesting enough to watch again. I probably would have been better off singing along with my Karaoke Revolution game.
